The B-1/B-2 visitor visa is for people traveling to the United States temporarily for business (B-1), pleasure, or medical treatment (B-2). In general, the B-1 visa is for travelers consulting with business partners, participating in scientific, educational, professional or business meetings/conferences, settling property or entering into contracts. The B-2 visa is for travel that is essentially recreational, including tourism, visiting friends or relatives, medical treatment, and activities of a social or community nature. Often, B-1 and B-2 visas are combined and issued as one visa: B-1/B-2.
Under US law, people applying for nonimmigrant visas must provide evidence that they do not intend to immigrate to the US. This assessment is made by conducting a personal interview.

Requirements
If you are applying for a B-1/B-2 visa, you must prove to the consular officer that you meet the requirements for a US visa under the US Immigration and Naturalization Act (INA). Section 214(b) of the INA presumes that every B-1/B-2 visa applicant is a prospective immigrant. You must overcome this statutory presumption by showing that:
The purpose of your trip to the United States is for a temporary visit, such as business, pleasure, or medical treatment. You intend to stay in the US for a specific, limited period of time. You have funds to cover your expenses while in the US. You have a permanent residence outside the United States, as well as social or economic ties that will ensure your return abroad after the end of your visit.
Required documents
If you are applying for a business/tourist visa, you must pay a visa fee and provide the following documents:
- Electronic Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form (DS-160).
- A passport valid for travel to the US with a validity date of at least six months beyond the intended period of stay in the US.
- One 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51mm) photograph taken within the last six months.
- In the event that the visa is issued, there may be an additional visa issuance fee.
- In addition to these documents, you must submit a letter to schedule an interview date and time.
