About the university
The American University in Bulgaria, abbreviated AUB, is a private university located in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. The university follows the traditional American model of liberal arts education, providing students with the opportunity to combine knowledge from different disciplines, which guarantees better professional realization in the future. AUBG regularly updates its programs to meet the changing demands of the business environment in today's global world. Teaching is conducted in English, and the university's international teachers are distinguished scholars in their field, with extensive teaching experience in a student community of different nationalities, cultures and ethnicities. It was founded in 1991 and about 1,000 students from over 40 countries, coming from 5 continents, are studying in it. About 40% of students are foreign.
Accreditation
The American University in Bulgaria is accredited both in Bulgaria and in the USA. AUBG received its accreditation in the USA from the New England Commission for Higher Education. The university issues a European diploma application (Europass), which automatically makes the degree from AUBG recognized throughout Europe.
Funding
The university is funded through support from private and corporate donors and tuition fees.
Friends and supporters from all over the world, including John Dimitri Panitsa, Ana Chaprashikova, Minko Balkanski, Atanas Zamfirov, the America for Bulgaria Foundation and many others, help to develop AUB.
Admission and Scholarships
AUBG admits students with high potential and diverse talents, who are among the most successful students in their graduates, among them winners of national mathematics Olympiads, champions of language competitions, outstanding athletes and students honored for their work for the benefit of society.
AUBG accepts students twice a year - for the fall and spring semesters. The university offers financial support and scholarships, both for academic excellence and based on the financial status of the applicant's family. Financial aid, various scholarships, Work & Travel programs – AUBG provides the best conditions for prospective students and does everything possible to ensure that they get the highest added value for the price they pay.
AUBG is one of the few universities that grants scholarships to its graduates to pursue master's or doctoral programs. The scholarship is awarded to AUBG graduates accepted to the top 20 universities in the USA, according to THE-QS World University Rankings.
Campus
Students in AUBG's undergraduate programs live and study at the "Skaptopara" campus in Blagoevgrad. There are 3 new modern dormitories; academic center "Balkanski", which includes classrooms, computer rooms and offices; Panitsa Library, which is the largest English-language library in South-Eastern Europe; and "America for Bulgaria" student center.
AUBG is the first institution in Bulgaria offering American-type accommodation to its students. Each of the dormitories has its own spirit and community, and provides a unique experience for young people. One of the requirements for students studying in AUBG's undergraduate programs is to live on campus, which is also part of the university's mission. The dormitories provide a smoke-free environment, are handicap accessible, and are funded by USAID/ASHA. They have dedicated areas for different activities which include: aerobics room, gym, music room, film and presentation room, pool and table tennis room, reception, kitchen and cafeteria.
Student life
AUBG promotes the entrepreneurial spirit and enables young people to hone their talents by participating in a variety of initiatives. Extracurricular activities help them develop 'soft skills' and put into practice what they learn in class. AUBG students can participate in over 40 student clubs based on interests. Among them are: business, entrepreneurship, student media, theater, musical, sports and many others.
AUBG students participate in conferences and competitions around the world, such as the prestigious Carroll Round international conference at Georgetown University, USA, and Microsoft's annual competition – Imagine Cup. The Goldman Sachs Global Leaders program has repeatedly recognized and rewarded the potential of AUBG students. In addition, AUBG annually holds a research conference where students and professors from the university present their work in various fields.
